A trained ear can distinguish a Beethoven sonata from Mozart in a fraction of a second — much as we recognize a friend's voice on the phone before they have said anything. This instant recognition lives in timbre: the spectral fingerprint of a sound, its harmonic content, attack, and texture.
But timbre alone cannot account for everything we hear. Stand inside Stockhausen's Oktophonie (1991), composed for eight channels arranged in a cube, and a recorded snippet tells you almost nothing. The work does not simply play music; it sculpts acoustic space. Sound objects are born, move in three dimensions, collide, and dissolve around the listener.
The full text argues that understanding spatial works requires more than acoustics or musicology. It proposes an ontology that can account for sound as a spatial object with a life, form, and death: the sound hyperobject.
